The collection consists primarily of the correspondence and papers generated by Russell Seibert while he was Director of Longwood Gardens. General and institutional files consist of minutes of meetings of Longwood's executive and special committees. There is also correspondence with the Board of Trustees which documents major policy decisions, interoffice memoranda, schedules for public events, and Public Relations Department records. Also included is Dr. Seibert's professional correspondence with major horticultural organizations.

Russell J. Seibert was a horticulturist, botanist, and director of Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania. He received his Ph.D. in botany from George Washington University in St. Louis. Water lilies were his original area of research interest, and Dr. Seibert had a long association with Shaw Gardens in St. Louis.
